How to House Train A Puppy
Many people fail to realize that with the newfound joy and pride of becoming the new owner of a bundle of joy known as puppy comes the responsibilities of teaching it how to use the bathroom properly. Unless you enjoy having varying odd shaped yellow stains on your new white carpet, then perhaps these few easy to follow steps will save you fifteen minutes of carpet cleaning.
Begin potty training the very first day you bring your puppy home. Let her explore her surrounding, irritate the old grouchy tom-cat and give her a drink of water. As soon as that happens, take her outside to relive herself. This way she starts to understand that once she takes a drink, she needs to go outside. Also, this trains you as the owner as well, to learn warning signs and be able to intercept the pup before anything happens!
The next thing that should happen is to develop a schedule for your four-legged friend. For example, a feeding schedule will make house training much easier. A puppy that eats whenever she wants is very hard to house train indeed! Make sure to take her outside 15 to 20 minutes after eating or drinking. She will then understand that going outside to the bathroom is good and to always go outside after she is done eating and drinking.
As soon as your puppy finishes doing whatever it was that her body required, praise her like she had done something wonderfully. Give her a favorite toy, wrestle with her and lots of Good dog!! What a good dog you are! Whos mommies little puppy? You are, yes you are! This will do just fine. This way she knows that she has pleased you and will want to continue to make you happy.
Assign her a kennel. If you are worried about any accidents when you are a way from home, then try a kennel. Yes, she will not like it and yes the pitiful howling and wailing and barking will break your heart into many pieces. Whatever you do, do not look back and look into her mournful eyes. This will cause you more pain and will result in rushing over to her kennel and letting her out to cuddle. This will get you nowhere and will make you late for were ever it is you had to be. This also helps at night, for if she does have an accident, she has a place that she can go were it is not soiled.
And last but not least, let her go around the house with supervision at first until you can be sure that she will understand when to go out when she has to.
